The Medusa Project was founded in 2021 by Devin McDonald, then a 17-year-old student in the Classical Honors Program at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. Devin is now a Classics and pre-law major at the University of Chicago and is spending her junior year at the University of Cambridge. She launched The Medusa Project after observing that Medusa is frequently interpreted through an inaccurate, male-centered framework and that Medusa imagery is often deployed to undermine women in positions of power, including Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Angela Merkel, Martha Stewart, and Oprah Winfrey.

The Medusa Project was founded in 2021 by Devin McDonald, a Classical Honors Program student at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, after seeing the Medusa image used regularly to demonize, discredit, and devalue powerful women. Hilary Clinton, Condoleeza Rice, Angela Merkel, Martha Stewart, and Oprah Winfrey are just a few among those targeted. For example, during the 2016 presidential campaign, a shocking illustration of Donald Trump as Perseus holding the severed head of Hillary Clinton as Medusa turned up on everything from tee shirts to coffee mugs.
